There is something special about bringing fresh flowers into your home. They instantly add colour, fragrance and warmth to a space, but even the most beautiful bouquet needs a little care to stay fresh.

The good news is that you don't need complicated techniques or expensive products. With a few simple habits, you can help your flowers stay vibrant and beautiful for longer.

Whether you've just received a bouquet as a gift or picked up flowers for your home, here's how to care for them properly.

1. Start with a Clean Vase

Before placing your flowers in water, make sure the vase is thoroughly clean. Bacteria can build up inside a vase and affect the quality of the water, which can cause flowers to wilt faster.

Wash the vase with warm water and soap, rinse it properly and fill it with fresh water before arranging your flowers.

2. Trim the Stems Before Putting Your Flowers in Water

Give the stems a fresh cut before placing your bouquet in the vase. Use a clean, sharp pair of scissors or garden shears to cut about 1–2 centimetres from the bottom of each stem.

Cutting the stems at a slight angle can increase the surface area available for water absorption and prevent the stem from sitting completely flat against the bottom of the vase. If possible, trim the stems while they are under running water or immediately place them into water after cutting.

3. Remove Leaves That Sit Below the Water

Check your bouquet for leaves that would sit below the waterline and remove them carefully.
Leaves submerged in water can begin to break down and encourage bacterial growth. Keeping the water clean helps your flowers stay healthier for longer.

4. Change the Water Regularly

One of the easiest ways to extend the life of fresh flowers is to keep their water clean.

Change the water every two to three days, or sooner if it becomes cloudy. When changing the water, rinse the vase and remove any fallen leaves or petals before adding fresh water.

You can also give the stems another small trim when changing the water to help maintain water absorption.

5. Keep Your Bouquet Away from Heat and Direct Sunlight

Fresh flowers generally last longer in a cool environment away from direct sunlight and sources of heat.

Avoid placing your bouquet directly beside a window with strong afternoon sunlight, near a cooker or oven, or next to appliances that produce heat.

A bright area with indirect light is usually a better choice.

6. Keep Flowers Away from Ripening Fruit

This is an easy detail to overlook. Ripening fruit releases a natural gas called ethylene, which can speed up the ageing process of some flowers.

For this reason, it is best to keep your bouquet away from fruit bowls and other sources of ripening produce.

7. Remove Fading Flowers and Leaves

Not every flower in a bouquet will age at exactly the same rate. As individual flowers begin to wilt, remove them along with any damaged or dying leaves.

This keeps the arrangement looking fresh and can help prevent decaying plant material from affecting the rest of the bouquet.

How Long Should Fresh Flowers Last?

The lifespan of a bouquet depends on the type of flowers, their condition when they are arranged and how they are cared for. Some varieties naturally last longer than others.

Good care can help preserve the appearance and freshness of many cut flowers, but there is no single number of days that applies to every bouquet. The most important things to remember are simple: clean water, a clean vase, freshly trimmed stems and the right location. Fresh flowers are meant to be enjoyed. You don't need a complicated routine to keep them looking beautiful. Taking a few minutes to refresh the water, trim the stems and remove fading leaves can make a noticeable difference.

At Alexandra's Floral, we believe flowers shouldn't only be reserved for major celebrations. A beautiful bouquet can make an ordinary day feel a little more special, too. So whether your flowers were gifted to you or you bought them simply because you wanted something beautiful at home, give them the care they deserve — and enjoy them for as long as you can.
